Résumé
While the metal tree that forms the centrepiece of Welcome
to Paradise may appear otherworldly, as artist Bekah Carran
says, her work is strongly influenced by 'everyday life and
seeing how people live'. As Carran describes it, this installation
is about the basic human desire for happiness and reflects
her desire to create something 'hopeful and gentle, tinged
with idealism, sentimentality and sadness.'
Welcome to Paradise operates like a time-out zone in
Telecom Prospect 2004. The viewer is invited to sit on
the park bench and contemplate this wistful sculpture, a grey
metal apple tree laden with rosy apples and a garland of convolvulus.
It's a sphere of quietness, a portable piece of tranquillity,
a chance to pretend you are somewhere else. Carran's attempt
to create a private place in a public space is inflected by
her comment that Welcome to Paradise is influenced
by her time working in mental health. As Carran observes:
'This work represents anyone, anywhere, sitting on a park
bench, dreaming sentimental dreams of the perfect life. A
world without hardship or adversity, but rather constant beauty
and contentment.'
