Résumé
There is nothing linear about the artists' collective et al. Charting the unstable
terrain of memory and identity, et al. assume multiple personalities with all
the uncertainty of a schizoid personality.
The diverse individual members of the collective come together under the inclusive
title of et al. Separately they have carved out their own distinctive practices,
from the 'blonding' technique of merit groting, whose brushstrokes rendered entire
galleries white, to the layered text works of Lillian Budd and p mule. Together
they defy any attempts at defining their artistic identity.
An amorphous entity, the collective seems to slip away from
you just as you begin to get close. Maintaining an interest
in social and institutional critique, et al. create installations
of sensory overload, incorporating discordant soundtracks,
imperfectly painted walls, visible wiring, outdated and mismatched
apparatus. Despite the sometimes chaotic appearance of these
works, inspection reveals layouts which are diagrammatic in
approach, charting a series of systems or circuits. Perhaps,
as someone once said to me, an et al. installation can best
be described as a 1980s Social Welfare office after the revolution
has come to town.
