Résumé
The lyrical titles of Fraser's works give us hints
of a narrative. In the 'Elizabeth Taylor' series, her titles speak in brittle
society voices dripping with glamour: 'Really, absolutely all
the men she married had an absurdly wonderful sense of humour', 'Really,
I was a teeny bit late because my make-up man was useless'. The
voices, however, are underscored by the names of anti-depressant
and anti-anxiety drugs - Xanax, Valium, Zoloft - that cut through
the sheen of the fabrics and the baubles that Fraser has drawn
on them, and introduce a shrill note of neuroticism to the works.
As curator Gregory Burke has observed, Fraser's strength as an
artist lies in her ability to 'pare down motifs to produce multiple
readings'.
