Artist's Résumé
Lonnie Hutchinson's sista7
is a strikingly beautiful work created from black building
paper which the artist has cut into delicate patterns resembling
lace, kowhaiwhai or fine wire mesh. Created for the the new
Christchurch Art Gallery's opening exhibition Te Puawai
o Ngai Tahu, sista7 is a response to Hutchinson's
home, the Canterbury region and, more specifically, the seven
peaks of the Banks Peninsula, sometimes called the 'seven
brothers', 'seven sleepers', or the 'seven sisters'. While
the structure of sista7 suggests the outline of these
seven monumental peaks, the fine patterns suggest layers of
personal, cultural and social history surrounding the region.
Hutchinson, who is of Ngai Tahu affiliation, feels 'passionately
fortunate that I make art in such an environment. For me this
is a spiritual journey of returning to the landscape of my
tipuna.'
